Daiokan Photography Software Review
Photographers, like all professionals, are always looking for ways to make their job easier and make more money. To help them do that, Daiokan (a startup from Belgium) has made their own software available to freelance and professional photographers to assist them in every aspect of the photography business. We got to go hands-on with the software to see how it works and how intuitive it was to use. Here’s the breakdown of everything you can do with Daoikan and what we thought about it.

When you first log on to Daiokan, you’re greeted with your own personalized dashboard with lists of upcoming sessions, recent sales, year-to-date earnings, and photos that are ready to be sent to clients. It’s a clean design and makes it easy to see a quick snapshot of your business. If you’re the kind of person that hates looking in multiple places for information and would rather have a one-stop-shop, you’re going to love the elegance of the design here.
This is likely where you will be spending the majority of your time on the Daiokan site. You will have a list of both upcoming photo shoots and ones you’ve already completed. You can quickly sort these by useful criteria like status, date, and client name. Clicking on one of the sessions brings you to the page for that individual shoot. This page has all of your client’s contact info along with their photos if you’ve uploaded them. During your busy season this is a fool-proof way to stay organized. There are also useful features like the ability to re-send photos or add a client, for example if your customer wants their grandmother to be able to look at or download the photos you can give them permission right from their Session page.
Most photographers are artists at heart, which means the actual business of running a photography business can be a real headache. Fortunately, Daoikan has tackled this problem with the same finesse and clean design they applied to the rest of the site. The first thing you’ll see is your earnings over the past two weeks. You can expand this out to the last month or last year if you’d like. It’s nice to be able to visualize when your busy months and slow months are and plan ahead for next year. Or make a concentrated effort to book more clients in a certain timeframe.
This is also where you can see all of your revenue from Daiokan. When clients pay you it accrues here and then you can cash it out whenever you want. You can also choose to just withdraw part of the money if you would like to treat Daoikan as an operating account for your business. Of course, for those of us who prefer everything to be automated, you set it up to send you a deposit at set intervals as well.
Similar to the Sessions page, you can see all of your transactions at the bottom for easy reference to see who has paid and when. You can also see additional orders and send a payment request from here too.
This is your own personal portfolio. All of the pictures you upload to Daoikan will go here. It’s not public either, so you don’t have to worry about organizing it to be client-friendly. Adding photos is easy, just drag and drop. This also lets you access your portfolio from anywhere if you don’t happen to be near your computer and want to look something up.
Merchandise = More Money
Daiokan has an enormous selection of items and merchandise that your customers can get photos printed on. Canvases, mugs, pillows, phone cases…you name it, they have it. What makes this service especially interesting is that you as the photographer get to pick which items are advertised to your clients as well as the price points. This lets you experiment and see what sells best and what an ideal cost is. This is great because it essentially lets you get paid twice on the same pictures.
You can choose between a free, gold and platinum model. The free model is not 100% free since they are taking a 10% commission for every transaction but all the extra money you can make from your shoots may cover this. For the gold membership, you pay 39 GBP a month, for platinum 69 GB. Both coming with better perks but the most important perk very low commission per transaction.
- The site is clean, functional and gives you an all-in-one place to run your business.
- On top of that, the potential for extra revenue from marketing is very exciting.
- If you’re the type of person that wants to spend less time on boring business tasks and more time taking pictures, you should 100% give Daiokan a try.
- When I talked with the owners they told me they are working on a lot more exciting features: More upsell products, a Lightroom plugin to directly upload your client pictures to their system, a clear distinction between corporate clients and non-business clients since they have different needs, custom branding, photo retouching,…. Every month they are refining the product roadmap based on photographer feedback, which is great.
They are still in a startup phase and missing a few essential features but I would definitely sign up for a trial. If they keep progressing like this, it might become the software to go for any photography business.
